2020 American documentary film

Coded Bias is an American documentary film directed by Shalini Kantayya that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

The film includes contributions from researchers Joy Buolamwini, Deborah Raji, Meredith Broussard, Cathy O’Neil, Zeynep Tufekci, Safiya Noble, Timnit Gebru, Virginia Eubanks, and Silkie Carlo, among others.

Summary

It follows researchers and advocates, principally MIT computer scientist and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League Joy Buolamwini, as they explore how algorithms encode and propagate bias.3456 The documentary touches on other ethical issues in Big Tech, including surveillance through facial recognition, and the perils of computer-based judgement in human evaluation. Others featured include Weapons of Math Destruction author Cathy O'Neill and members of Big Brother Watch, including Silkie Carlo, in London.7

Release

The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.8 It was released in virtual cinemas across North America in November 2020.9 On April 5, 2021, the documentary was made available to stream on Netflix.10

Critical response

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 100% based on 42 reviews with an average rating of 7.90/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Clear, concise, and comprehensive, Coded Bias offers a chilling look at largely unseen side effects of modern society's algorithmic underpinnings."11 On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 73 out of 100 based on 7 critic reviews.12
